Desert biology: When we receive a heavy dose of winter rains, California’s deserts explode in colorful wildflowers in the spring. During my first superbloom visit in 2017, I was absolutely delighted to be surrounded by carpets of primrose and desert sand verbena in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Butterflies were flying around everywhere and caterpillars ate as quickly as they could. The raptors were arriving, ready to feast on the fattening caterpillars.

If you haven’t been to a California superbloom yet, I highly recommend it.
