If you're hiking along trails near streams and rivers in Northern California in early spring, you will likely come upon these strange looking alien flowers. In this work, the charismatic pipevine swallowtail butterflies quietly float above the tangled vines of California Dutchman pipevine, while a black phoebe lurks among the foliage.
In Native American traditions, the black phoebe is seen as a messenger from the spirit world. This little plump little insectivore calls in protection and adaptability and brings in messages of hope and renewal. Mysterious and and iridescent pipevine swallowtail butterflies symbolize resilience and complexity.
